Composer: Roger D. Linder
I don't need to sell my love
But I'm looking for a certain buyer
I don't have to push and shove
'Cause I'm a flyer
I hate to be ruthless
It just isn't me
I search for the truth
It's all that I see
I ran and took flight one day
But I stumbled on a cloud
The buyer, she looked my way
But I didn't see her for the crowd
High in the sky I look Earthward
I search the whole world, heading northward
I won't stop until I find the buyer
But something tells me I shouldn't go higher
I hate to be ruthless
It just isn't me
I search for the truth
It's all that I see
The buyer is a world traveler, I know
I search in rain, I search in snow
Late into the night, start early in the day
And when I find her, I'll be ready to say:
I hate to be ruthless
It just isn't me
I search for the truth
It's all that I see
The strange thing about it is that she's within arm's reach
But why does it have to be like a million miles to me?
I hate to be ruthless
It just isn't me
I search for the truth
It's all that I see
Commentary
Written November 27, 1973. In college, a girl named Ruth Byer was in one of my classes, and I instantly fell in love with her (like many of my early attempts at getting a girlfriend.) Too shy to take action, I wrote a song instead. Her father worked on an oil field in Iran, so I included the phrase "I ran" as an inside reference.
After that semester, I never saw her again.
