A Dream Goes On Forever...

by Cathy Lee Brandstetter
Lu'cid (loo'sid) adj. 1, clear; easily understood; distinct. 2, sane; rational. 3, shining.
Our featured artists for this episode are known as Lucid Dreamers, and I hope to achieve lucidity in explaining why these dreamers are so special. Lucid Dreamers are Stacey Young and Chris Davis, out of York, PA. They have been writing and recording music together in their own studio for the past three years. Influenced by music from the '60s through the '90s, some standout comparisons would be Todd Rundgren, XTC and Bourgeois Tagg. Releasing music on their own label, Axis Records, they hope to find an audience utilizing the Internet. (PatroNet, you listening?) Their first release, "Postcards From Earth" was very well received by this listener!

Chris and Stacey spent 2-3 years compiling this release, culled from various compositions that materialized over an even longer period of time. In 1990, they found themselves in a "covers" band, Private Heaven, which split up 4 years later, due to "musical differences". The two stayed together, built a studio and wrote the original songs which appear on "Postcard". Between holding down "regular" jobs (Stacey has two; Chris is a piano tuner/tech) and equipment problems due to a fire in the studio, there were long gaps of time between recording sessions, but the outcome remains true to these dreamers' lucid vision.

The work is a shared output of effort and talent. Stacey and Chris trade lead vocal and keyboard duties, while Stacey also mans the guitars, bass and drums. Chris contributes the inspiring lyrical work. Between the two of them, they achieve a rare synchronicity of vision. The fourteen songs are lush, pop-style tunes with a spiritual, environmental consciousness to the lyrics. I found three personal favorites right off..."World Full of Poetry", "Secret Admirer" and "Rhythm of the World". All of the tunes strike that special chord heard when the music is highly unique and personal. (Remind you of anyone?) I would highly recommend taking a chance on Lucid Dreamers (and don't forget, your dollars are helping a couple of way-cool, way-back TR-fans to achieve their dream).

"Postcards From Earth" is available on CD ($10) or cassette ($8) and shipping is included. Lucid Dreamers have some excellent backup help on this outing, including a neighbor friend, Demian Yumei, who did some dreamy backing vocals. Stacey is working on several outside projects in the studio now, and Lucid Dreamers are very excited about 7 new songs already recorded for a new release, due out by summer's end.

Dreams are so much better when they're lucid!
