9. NEXT BIG THING

This is the second of Brent's two songs (see "The Turnaround") that we had worked on when he was still in Sacramento. He took the title from an idea that I'd talked with him about when Bourgeois Tagg was still together, so this song is has the longest gestation of any on the record. Brent had great musical ideas for the verse and chorus--all I had to do was come up with the middle part where the song gets weird, then write the lyrics and skew the original idea 180º to make the song reflect to my present attitude.

I quit waiting for the Next Big Thing
I quit waiting for the phone to ring
The news is gonna have to be loud
For me to hear anything from where I live now
If there's something new under the sun
If there's some amazing phenomenon
We'll see what the Next Big Thing will be

I got plans of my own tomorrow
